Welcome To Defense Systems

You're probably thinking, what, another Defense publication? Why?

Answer: Because if you work in IT and communications, you won't find another publication as closely aligned with your information needs as this one.

PostNewsweek Tech Media has launched Defense Systems to bring you and 40,000 of your colleagues in-depth coverage of the Defense and intelligence community-comprehensive stories on how the Defense Department is transforming, from its business networks to the services' tactical, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems.

As a veteran of sister publication Government Computer News, I have had readers tell me they wanted a publication that tackles programs, policies and systems purely from a Defense perspective. Defense Systems will build on the coverage that GCN has provided for the last 25 years. The magazine's added space and dedicated focus on DOD, intelligence and the armed forces means Defense Systems will serve up a broader and deeper menu of information more relevant to your needs. The magazine also will tackle the department's new mission to work closely with the intelligence community and the departments of Homeland Security and Justice on domestic defense.

We've picked some of the most experienced journalists to write stories for Defense Systems. I've spent 15 years in journalism, the last five directing coverage of Defense IT programs, policies, systems and decision-makers for GCN. My goal is for this magazine to provide the most thorough coverage of Defense communications and IT programs available anywhere.

But don't take my word for it. Flip through the pages of this inaugural issue and see for yourself. You'll learn about a content management program at the Defense Information Systems Agency to let users access information in real time, what makes CIO John Grimes tick, how DOD's faring with its business enterprise architecture and details from senior IT leaders about how they are bringing network-centricity to their agencies.

PostNewsweek Tech Media will publish Defense Systems six times this year. But think of this as a joint operation: I want this to be a magazine for you, the readers. Feel free to tell me what you would like to see covered, to share your insights and to relate stories of transformation taking place in your own organizations.
