Gates fills key Defense command positions

President Bush has accepted recommendations from Defense Secretary Robert Gates for three top DOD jobs.

Army Gen. George Casey, commander of Multi-National Forces-Iraq (MNF-I), will fill the vacancy left by the retirement of Army Chief of Staff Gen. Peter Schoomaker.

Also retiring, Army Gen. John Abizaid, commander of the Central Command, will be succeeded by Navy Adm. William J. “Fox” Fallon, commander of the Pacific Command.

To replace Casey in the MNF-I top job, Gates recommended Army Lt. Gen. David Petraeus.
