Blum in for two more years By Dawn S. Onley Editor The Senate last month confirmed a two-year extension for Army Lt. Gen. H. Steven Blum as chief of the National Guard Bureau.
Blum became Guard chief in April 2003. Prior to that, he served as the chief of staff for both the Northern Command and the North American Aerospace Defense Command at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo.
Blum is lauded for overseeing a growing number of Guard deployments across a myriad of missions, from war operations in Iraq and Afghanistan to natural disasters. After Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, the Guard deployed tens of thousands of its members to support the Gulf region, the largest response to a domestic disaster in history.
Last year, Bush sent roughly 6,000 troops to help secure the United States borders, with Operation Jump Start.
